Positioning

Bahrain is the most permissive Gulf state for ad-hoc business aviation: no slot, no curfew, fast permits, and the cheapest fuel in the GCC.

LFS treats OBBI as the Gulf flexibility station. Operators that lose a Dubai (OMDB) slot, hit a Doha (OTHH) ground stop, or need a fuel-and-go between Europe and India route through OBBI because the field's combination of 24/7 customs, no slot regime, and a dedicated Executive Jet Terminal makes 90-minute turnarounds routine on a wide-body bizjet.

Operations notes

OBBI runs dual parallel runways (12L/30R and 12R/30L) with the long runway accommodating heavy charter and freighter operations. Business aviation parks at the BIA Executive Jet Terminal on the west side with eight wide-body stands and direct landside customs. LFS staffs the terminal 24/7 and holds standing fuel-release authority with BAPCO Aviation for prepaid operators.

Approaches are ILS/RNAV with both runway directions CAT I — Bahrain rarely loses operations to weather. Dust events (March–June shamal) and summer haze occasionally drop RVR but rarely below 1,800 m. The single operational constraint is military priority on RWY 12R/30L: civil traffic transitions to 12L/30R during US Navy 5th Fleet rotations and during BAHRAIN INTERNATIONAL AIRSHOW (alternating years).

Cabotage is non-restrictive for non-revenue movements. Stand assignment for Boeing BBJ / Airbus ACJ confirmed against tail number 12 hours prior. Customs accepts EAD pre-clearance for crew via the BCAA portal.

Slots & filing

No slot coordination required. Movements are confirmed via stand booking only; LFS files the BIA arrival/departure pair through the Executive Jet Terminal coordinator. Peak congestion is limited to 04:00–06:00 LT (Gulf carrier connecting wave at the main terminal) — GA stands are unaffected.

Customs & immigration

Bahrain operates an e-Visa scheme for 100+ nationalities with visa-on-arrival as a backstop. GAT customs averages 6–10 minutes for crew, 12–15 minutes for passengers including baggage. Tech-stop passengers may remain onboard without re-clearance; one cabin door open is permissible.

Fuel

Jet A-1 is supplied by BAPCO Aviation via hydrant on all Executive Jet Terminal stands and bowser on the main apron. Pricing tracks Arab Gulf platts plus published delta; Bahrain consistently posts the lowest into-plane fuel cost in the Gulf. LFS releases fuel within 30 minutes of upload request for prepaid uplifts.

Crew logistics

Crew hotels within 10 minutes of OBBI include the Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq, Four Seasons Bahrain Bay, and Westin City Centre. GCC visa-on-arrival applies to most non-restricted nationalities. LFS arranges airside-to-hotel transfer with security escort for tail-to-bed transit on overnight crew.

Weather & seasonal factors

Shamal dust events (March–June) and summer humidity (June–September with dew points > 28°C) dominate the operational calendar. Winter (December–February) is fog-low and the ideal operating window. CAT II/III not certified — diversions in rare low-visibility events go to OMDB or OTHH.

Permits & lead times

  • Landing: BCAA landing permit on file; private and charter cleared 4–6 hours for repeat operators.
  • Overflight: Bahrain FIR — block clearance via BCAA, standard 24 h.
  • Lead time: 24 hours standard, AOG/medevac immediate.

Operator FAQs

Manama (OBBI) — frequently asked

Why route through Bahrain instead of Dubai?

No slot regime, lower fuel pricing, faster turnaround. OBBI is the Gulf field of choice for fuel-and-go, ad-hoc charter, and any movement Dubai cannot slot.

Is the Executive Jet Terminal staffed 24/7?

Yes. LFS has a permanent desk; customs, immigration, and fuel are continuous.

Can I clear a non-Schengen passenger here on a tech stop?

Pax may remain on board without re-clearance. If disembarking, e-Visa or visa-on-arrival applies for most nationalities — LFS confirms eligibility against passport on file 12 hours prior.

Is there hangar space for overnight?

Limited at the Executive Jet Terminal; GAS operates a heated hangar with prior reservation. LFS books 7 days in advance.
