UK flight permits and foreign carrier permit support

Request UK flight support from LFS 24/7. We check commercial carrier permissions, the flight's operating category and airport arrangements in one trip file; private and state flights are not treated as commercial charters.

The UK CAA requires non-UK air carriers operating commercial services to, from or within the UK to hold a Foreign Carrier Permit before the flight. One-off or short-term non-scheduled charter services use the Ad Hoc Permit route; regular scheduled or series-charter services use the Scheduled or Series Charter Permit route. The CAA states that a valid UK Third Country Operator Certificate is required for permit issuance.

A Foreign Carrier Permit is not a blanket requirement for every foreign flight. The CAA lists qualifying private, positioning/ferry/delivery and test flights, and ICAO-airworthiness-compliant UK overflights among categories not requiring this additional approval. These exceptions have defined scope; LFS checks the actual operation rather than treating a charter flight as private.

UK permissions by operating category

Commercial charter: Ad Hoc Permit

The UK CAA requires non-UK air carriers operating commercial services to, from or within the UK to hold a Foreign Carrier Permit before the flight. One-off or short-term non-scheduled charter services use the Ad Hoc Permit route; regular scheduled or series-charter services use the Scheduled or Series Charter Permit route. The CAA states that a valid UK Third Country Operator Certificate is required for permit issuance.

Private flights and qualifying overflights

A Foreign Carrier Permit is not a blanket requirement for every foreign flight. The CAA lists qualifying private, positioning/ferry/delivery and test flights, and ICAO-airworthiness-compliant UK overflights among categories not requiring this additional approval. These exceptions have defined scope; LFS checks the actual operation rather than treating a charter flight as private.

VIP, diplomatic and military movements

VIP is not itself a commercial or state operating category. Tell LFS whether the flight is private, commercial charter or a state operation so the appropriate permission route can be checked.

For foreign-government state flights and foreign military-registered aircraft, the UK CAA directs operators to seek the relevant diplomatic or military flight clearance instead of a Foreign Carrier Permit. LFS coordinates the flight-support file; government clearance remains separate from airport handling, parking and slots.

Airport permission is a separate check

A carrier permit or a qualifying exception does not allocate an airport slot, reserve parking or confirm handling. Send the destination, UTC schedule, aircraft and ground time to LFS so airport-specific arrangements can be checked alongside the applicable operating permission.

Information typically needed

  • Operator name, nationality and whether the flight is private, commercial, state or military.
  • Aircraft registration, type, MTOW and call sign.
  • Routing with United Kingdom FIR entry and exit points, and UTC times.
  • For landings: airport, ground time, passenger and crew numbers and nationalities, or cargo description.
  • Certificates of registration, airworthiness and insurance, plus AOC for commercial flights.

What LFS does for United Kingdom permits

LFS is a flight support provider, not part of the UK Civil Aviation Authority / Department for Transport, and never promises an outcome. Within that, we:

  • Tell you which authorisations the trip appears to need.
  • Check documents for consistency and expiry before filing.
  • Submit, follow up and amend the permit when timings or aircraft change.
  • Coordinate handling, fuel and crew logistics in United Kingdom on the same file — see overflight permits and landing permits.

Inquiry checklist for operators

The more of this you can share in the first message, the faster the request can be assessed:

  1. 01Operator legal name and 24-hour contact.
  2. 02Aircraft registration, type, MTOW and call sign.
  3. 03Type of operation: scheduled, non-scheduled, VIP, diplomatic or military.
  4. 04Overflight, technical stop or landing (airport and ground time).
  5. 05UTC dates and times for each sector.
  6. 06Crew and passenger nationalities, or cargo description.
