Positioning

Jeddah is the gateway to Mecca, the largest Red Sea hub, and the operational defining factor for any GA movement around Hajj.

OEJN's strategic weight comes from Hajj — for 4–6 weeks each year, slot availability collapses, ground stops are routine, and any operator without an LFS-style local representative ends up diverting. LFS staffs Jeddah year-round but expands the desk to 24/7 augmented coverage from Dhul-Qaedah onward. Outside Hajj, OEJN is the Red Sea entry point for NEOM-bound and Red Sea-resort traffic.

Operations notes

OEJN runs three parallel runways (16L/34R, 16C/34C, 16R/34L) and is segregated by traffic type — Hajj pilgrim traffic uses the north terminals; business and commercial GA park at the SPA and TAG terminals on the southwest side. LFS routes operators against the published terminal allocation; misrouted arrivals incur 20+ minute taxi delays.

Slot coordination is enforced year-round but becomes critical during Hajj (typically May–July depending on the lunar calendar). GACA suspends ad-hoc filings 7 days before Eid al-Adha and reopens 7 days after. LFS pre-positions Hajj-window slot pairs for operators on file 60 days in advance.

Cabotage and overflight follow standard GACA rules. The new King Abdulaziz Hajj Terminal (Phase 3) has reduced commercial passenger congestion at the GA aprons but Hajj-era apron pressure remains the single largest operational risk.

Slots & filing

GACA Slots Office allocates against Hajj quota. Non-Hajj movements file 24 h standard. During Hajj, slot pool is reserved for state-charter pilgrim traffic and Royal Family movements; commercial GA windows are released against a pre-filed schedule only. LFS files 60 days ahead for Hajj-period operators.

Customs & immigration

Royal Terminal handles state and protocol; SPA / TAG terminals handle commercial GA. Crew clearance is sub-8 minutes; passenger clearance 10–15 minutes off-Hajj, 20–35 minutes during Hajj season. Saudi e-Visa applies to most nationalities; Umrah visa is a separate workflow for pilgrim-related movements.

Fuel

Jet A-1 supplied by Saudi Aramco Aviation via hydrant on all GA stands. Pricing tracks Arab Gulf platts. During Hajj, fuel release windows extend by 30–60 minutes due to hydrant queue priority for pilgrim charter aircraft.

Crew logistics

Ritz-Carlton Jeddah, Park Hyatt Jeddah, and Rosewood Jeddah are 25–40 minutes from the GA terminals. LFS arranges airside escort. NEOM-bound crew transition by ground (4 h to Tabuk) or via second leg to OETB.

Weather & seasonal factors

Hot coastal climate with year-round high humidity. Summer (June–September) surface temperatures exceed 42°C with reduced takeoff performance. Red Sea low-cloud events occasionally drop ceiling at dawn during winter; CAT I ILS on all three runways supports recovery.

Permits & lead times

  • Landing: GACA landing permit; Hajj season requires additional MOFA clearance for non-pilgrim VIP movements.
  • Overflight: Jeddah FIR — GACA block clearance.
  • Lead time: 24 hours; Hajj season 72 hours minimum.

Operator FAQs

Jeddah (OEJN) — frequently asked

How does Hajj affect my Jeddah operation?

Slot pool reserves for pilgrim charter and Royal Family movements; commercial GA operates against pre-filed schedule only. File 60 days ahead via LFS.

Which terminal should I file into?

SPA or TAG for commercial GA; Royal Terminal for state. LFS routes against your permit category and operator history.

Is OEJN viable as a NEOM gateway?

Yes for now, but OETB (Tabuk) is faster ground transfer to NEOM (4 h vs 14 h). LFS quotes both options.

What's the Umrah visa requirement for non-Muslim crew?

Non-applicable for non-disembarking crew. LFS uses standard Saudi e-Visa or visa-on-arrival for crew rest in Jeddah.
