First, the airport codes
Al Ain International Airport uses ICAO code OMAL and IATA code AAN. Earlier versions of this article referred to it as OMAA — that is incorrect. OMAA / AUH is Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi city, roughly 150 km away by road. The page address has been kept so existing links still work, but every operational reference here is to OMAL.
Abu Dhabi Airports, which operates both airports, now presents Al Ain on its website as Tahnoun International Airport. You may see either name in correspondence; the ICAO code OMAL is what matters for flight plans and permits.
Al Ain International Airport at a glance
According to Abu Dhabi Airports, the airport opened in 1994 and lies about 18 km northwest of Al Ain city, in the Eastern Region of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi near the border with Oman. The operator lists one terminal, three gates, a 4,000 m runway and a parallel 4,000 m taxiway that can serve as a runway when needed, and notes that the airport is developing as a logistics hub. Published aeronautical data place the field elevation at about 865 ft.
A 4,000 m runway is comfortably long for business jets, though performance still depends on weight, temperature and runway condition. Summer temperatures in the Al Ain area are high, so check take-off performance carefully for midday departures.
Why operators choose Al Ain
Al Ain is the natural airport when the passengers' business is in Al Ain itself — the city's government offices, universities, hospitals, heritage sites and the Oman border region. Flying direct avoids a long road transfer from Abu Dhabi or Dubai. Some operators also look at Al Ain because it is a smaller airport than the main hubs, but any expectation of easier slots, parking or faster processing must be confirmed for the specific date; we do not promise it.
Al Ain (OMAL) or Abu Dhabi (OMAA)?
Choose OMAL when the destination is Al Ain and the aircraft and schedule suit the airport's hours and services. Choose OMAA when passengers are going to Abu Dhabi city, need onward international connections, or when broader handling and FBO options are important. Our Abu Dhabi OMAA handling guide covers that airport, and the Abu Dhabi Airports partner page explains how LFS coordinates with the airport operator.
UAE permits for an Al Ain flight
Foreign-registered non-scheduled flights to the UAE generally need a landing permission from the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority, and routings normally cross other states that need overflight permits. Our UAE overflight and landing permits page explains the process, documents and the difference between private and commercial flights. For state flights, see diplomatic clearance.
All permits remain subject to approval by the relevant authority. Changes to aircraft, crew, passengers or times can require amendments, so tell the desk as soon as a change is known.
Handling, fuel and ground services
Ground handling at OMAL is arranged with the airport's handling provider; LFS requests services on the operator's behalf and confirms them in writing. We are not the airport operator or the handler. Services to confirm include parking, passenger processing, ground power, catering delivery, cleaning and crew transport.
- Fuel: Jet A-1 uplift is arranged through the airport's supplier or a contract fuel release — see aviation fuel.
- Crew: hotels in Al Ain and transport — see crew logistics.
- Flight planning: ATC flight plans, NOTAMs and weather through flight planning.
- Customs and immigration: processed at the airport for international arrivals; check passenger visa requirements before departure.
Charter, leasing and who does what
LFS provides trip support for these flights: permits, handling coordination, fuel, flight planning and crew logistics. Charter, ACMI/leasing, aircraft sales and management are handled by our sister brand MEGA. If you need an aircraft as well as trip support, tell us and we will connect the two requests so you keep one point of contact for the trip.
Typical Al Ain mission profiles
Government and VIP visits
Visits to government offices and institutions in Al Ain often combine a diplomatic or VIP protocol with a short ground time. Confirm protocol requirements, passenger processing and vehicle access in advance.
Medical and family travel
Al Ain has major hospitals. For patient transfers, the aircraft configuration, medical team and ground ambulance timing should be planned together; see our medevac flight support page.
Cargo and logistics
Abu Dhabi Airports highlights growth in cargo at Al Ain. For freight charters, confirm cargo terminal handling and any dangerous-goods requirements with the airport before planning — see cargo aircraft ground handling.
Distances and ground transport
Al Ain International sits northwest of the city, so most passenger transfers into central Al Ain are short road journeys. Road transfers between Al Ain and Abu Dhabi city, or between Al Ain and Dubai, are much longer and are the main reason operators fly directly into OMAL when the destination is Al Ain. Book chauffeured cars or coaches in advance and share the arrival time in UTC and local time (UAE time is UTC+4, with no daylight saving).
For return trips, agree a pick-up time that allows for passenger processing at the private or general aviation facility, and share it with the crew so fuelling, catering and the flight plan are aligned with the departure slot or estimated off-block time.
If passengers also need to cross into Oman by road after arrival, check border-crossing rules and document requirements for each traveller before the flight; they are separate from the aircraft's permits.
Planning around heat, hours and parking
Al Ain is inland and summer temperatures are often very high. That affects take-off performance, cabin temperature on the ground and crew duty planning. Ask for ground power and air-conditioning arrangements when parking for longer periods, and plan departures for the cooler part of the day if performance is marginal.
Confirm airport opening hours, customs availability and parking duration for your date when you request handling. Even at a quieter airport, parking for larger aircraft or long stays should be agreed in advance rather than assumed.
Common planning mistakes to avoid
- Filing or quoting OMAA when the destination is Al Ain — always use OMAL in flight plans, permits and handling requests.
- Treating a smaller airport as automatically quicker; processing and parking still need confirmation.
- Leaving visas or passenger documents until the permit is approved; run them in parallel.
- Not planning an alternate: OMAA and other UAE airports should be considered against weather, hours and aircraft performance.
Information to send with your request
- Aircraft type, registration, MTOW and operator; private or commercial status.
- Arrival and departure times in UTC, origin and onward destination.
- Crew and passenger numbers and nationalities.
- Handling, fuel, catering, transport and any protocol requirements.
